FAQ โ Dice Roller Calculator
What is a Dice Roller Calculator?
A digital tool that simulates rolling physical dice using server-side cryptographic randomness. It supports standard RPG dice (D4โD100), multiple dice, and modifiers for tabletop games, board games, and probability experiments.
Is the dice roller truly random?
Yes. Rolls are generated server-side using PHP's random_int() function, which uses cryptographically secure randomness. This is more random than physical dice, which can have manufacturing imperfections.
What does "1d20+5" mean?
This is standard dice notation: 1 die with 20 sides, plus a modifier of 5. The format is NdS+M where N = number of dice, S = sides, M = modifier. So 2d8+3 means roll two 8-sided dice and add 3 to the total.
What types of dice can I roll?
D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D20, and D100 (percentile). You can roll up to 100 dice at once. The D6 is most common for board games, while D20 is the signature die for D&D and similar RPGs.
What is a modifier?
A modifier is a number added to (or subtracted from) the dice total. In RPGs, modifiers come from ability scores, proficiency bonuses, or magical effects. For example, an attack roll might be 1d20+7.
Can I use this for board games?
Yes. Set dice type to D6 and number of dice to match your game (usually 1 or 2 for most board games). The roller works for Monopoly, Risk, Yahtzee, Settlers of Catan, and any game requiring dice.
What is a natural 20 (nat 20)?
In D&D and similar RPGs, rolling a 20 on a D20 (before modifiers) is called a "natural 20" or "critical hit." It has a 5% chance of occurring and usually means automatic success or double damage.
How does the distribution work?
When rolling multiple dice, the calculator tracks how many times each face value appeared. This is useful for probability experiments and verifying randomness over many rolls.
Can I use this for probability experiments?
Yes. Roll large numbers of dice to observe probability distributions. For example, rolling 100d6 will show a roughly even distribution across all faces, demonstrating the law of large numbers.
Does the calculator save my rolls?
Roll history is kept during your current session and displayed below the results. It clears when you refresh the page or click the Clear button. No data is stored on the server.
